Bout of Books 4.0 Readathon: Book Confessions

Welcome everyone to the second day of the Bout of Books Readathon 4.0! For more info on the readathon, click on the nice picture at the top to go to the official Bout of Books website, where you can also find other challenges and awesome giveaways.

Today I am your challenge host! I hope you all got off a good start, and already got some reading done. Either way, it's now time to grab a cup of tea and a snack and share your Book Confessions!

The Book Confessions challenge consists of two parts. I know some of you have a lot of stories and love to tell them, but others need some more motivation. Therefore you can choose one of the two options. If you feel like doing them both, I won't stop you!

For one lucky participant I'm giving away a Mystery Book from The Book Depository. I'm not telling you which one, it's a surprise!

To be entered, answer one of the two questions on your blog, in the comments below, on Facebook. Pretty much where ever you want as long as I can find it. Leave directions or a link to your comment in the form below. The giveaway is open internationally, as long as you are signed up on the Bout of Books site! (This is a 24-hour challenge. If you fill in the form after that you're not entered for the giveaway)

I'm too lazy to think of an embarrassing bookish story, so I'll do the this or that questions :p

Physical book or eBook? Physical books all the way! A screen cannot compare to holding an actual book in your hands.
Paperback or Hardcover? Paperbacks! They're so much nicer to read and easier to take with you.
Reality or Make-believe? Make-believe.
Adult or Young-Adult? YA, duh! :p
Dog ears or Bookmarks? Bookmarks. Dog ears are EVIL.
Breaking the spine or Barely open the book? Barely opening the book. I'm a little obsessed with keeping my books in perfect condition :p
Tea or Coffee? Tea.
Reading in bed or On the couch? In bed.
Series or Standalone? Standalone. My memory isn't good enough for series :p
Original or TV Adaptation? Original!
Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? Defying motion sickness. Audiobooks take too long to get through for me - like I said, bad memory.
Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Author crushes!
Interview or Guest post? Guest posts can be good with an interesting topic, but in general, interviews.

Physical book or eBook?: Physical Book.  Always.  Because "There is nothing  like holding a real book in your hands."

Paperback or Hardcover?: Depends--for convenient reading, paperback; for collecting my vintage mysteries, hardback.

Reality or Make-believe?: Mostly make-believe.  I primarily read mysteries--so I prefer my murders to be "pretend."  I don't do well with true-crime.

Adult or Young-Adult? Adult

Dog ears or Bookmarks? Bookmarks--I don't care if it's just a piece of paper, I will not damage a book to mark my place.

Breaking the spine or Barely open the book?Well...I'm not in favor of breaking the spine, but I don't hold the book so I can barely see in it either.

Tea or Coffee? Tea

Reading in bed or On the couch?  Does not matter. I will read anywhere, any time.

Series or Standalone? Series--if the characters are good. But, really, I'm good with either.

Original or TV Adaptation? Original

Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? Defy motion sickness

Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Crushes!

Interview or Guest post? Guest post.

I can't think of any shocking/embarrassing/funny book stories, so I'm answering Part 2!

Physical book or ebook: Physical! So far I have resisted the ebook revolution. Maybe I'll get there eventually, but I really like having a physical book to hold and to admire on my shelves.
Paperback or hardcover: Paperback -- less expensive, more portable. There are a few authors whom I'll buy in hardcover, though.
Reality or make-believe: I love both realistic fiction and fantasy; I couldn't possibly choose between them!
Adult or young adult: I enjoy both, but I'm getting a little burned out on YA right now. It's a genre that seems to be heavily influenced by trends (vampires! dystopias! love triangles!), and that annoys me.
Dog-ears or bookmarks: Definitely bookmarks. I'll only dog-ear a page if it's some kind of emergency. (What? There are totally book-related emergencies.)
Break the spine or barely open the book: I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I'm a spine breaker.
Tea or coffee: I'm not a huge fan of either, honestly. I guess I prefer coffee...which actually means that I enjoy Starbucks Frappucinos.
Read in bed or on the couch: Either! The couch gives me more back support, though.
Series or stand-alone: I read both but prefer stand-alones. I like stories that have a planned and well-thought-out ending. Most series drag on and on, and eventually all the stories get recycled. I don't mind a series with a finite number of books, though.
Original or TV adaptation: My rule is that the book is always better. Having said that, I vastly prefer the TV show "Bones" (at least in its prime) to the Kathy Reichs books.
Defy motion sickness or audiobooks: Defy motion sickness. I do get queasy when I read in the car, but I find that mint-flavored gum helps to keep it at bay.
Author crushes or who-was-that-guy-again? I get author crushes in the sense that, if I find an author I love, I'll rush out and read all of his/her books.
Interview or guest post: Interview. I don't really know why; I just prefer it! :)

Brenna (EverAfterEsther) said...

Physical book or eBook? Physical! I'm ALWAYS flipping back to double check earlier info, and I have just a hard time trying to do that with an e-book!

Paperback or Hardcover? Probably hardcover because my paperbacks always end up bent and funny looking.

Reality or Make-believe? Make-believe; sometimes I don't mind a bit of realism, but for the most part I don't want to read about real life- I already live it enough.

Adult or Young-Adult? YA, hands down! It tends to be more fun, and I identify with it more somehow.

Dog ears or Bookmarks? I USED to dog ear all my bookmarks until I started blogging! Now I have a bookmark at all times :)

Breaking the spine or Barely open the book? Only books I've reread have broken spines. I don't like doing that. The pages fall out too easily :(

Tea or Coffee? Neither! I don't drink either one, I'd probably pick hot chocolate for a hot drink.

Reading in bed or On the couch? In bed! It's quieter in my room than it is on the couch in the living room :)

Series or Standalone? Series - I know most books are now series and that gets tiring, but if I LOVE a book I always want to read more!

Original or TV Adaptation? Original. I'm not big on TV.

Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? I actually don't get motion sickness, so if I'm a passenger I'll read a book, but since I can't drive and read at the same time then I listen to audiobooks.

Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Author crushes.

Interview or Guest post? Guest post- I find interviews are harder to prepare for and tend to be more repetative.

I cannot think of a single story (although I'm sure one will come to me later today) so I'll answer part two:

1)
Physical or eBook?  I definitely prefer physical books but I’ll
read eBooks if that’s the only option or I’m traveling and want to take a bunch
of books along.2)
Paperback or Hardcover?  If I have to choose then I suppose paperback
because they’re easier to read.  But I
don’t have a strong preference either way.
3)
Reality or Make-believe?  Well I prefer fiction over non-fiction so I
guess I’d say make-believe.
4)
Adult or young adult?  The majority of the books I read are adult so
that’s my preference.
5)
Dog ears or Bookmarks?  Definitely bookmarks!  I have tons of them lying around.
6)
Breaking the spine or barely open the book?  Breaking the spine.  If I can’t get the book open to read it, then
what’s the point?
7)
Tea or Coffee?
Definitely tea, with some milk!
8)
Reading in bed or On the couch?  In bed!
Especially in the morning or right before bed.  Well, any time really!
9)
Series or Standalone?  Probably standalone, unless it’s a great
book, then I want more so give me a series.
But it seems like there are so many series now that just drag on and on.
10) Original or TV Adaptation?
Definitely original.  So few
adaptations are really good.
11) Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks?
Defy motion sickness!  I’m lucky I
don’t suffer from this.  Reading while
traveling is one of the best ways to pass the time.
12) Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again?  Hmm, depends on the author.  But I’m not that obsessed with author’s so I
guess I’d have to say, “Who was that guy?”
13) Interview or guest post?
Probably interview because I love reading them, especially if the interviewer
asks great questions.

margie c {the bumble girl} said...

I don't really have any stories, unless you count the time that I mistakenly thought that Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy was a retelling, bought them and then had to hide them from my parents, lol!

Here's Part two:
1) Physical books!
2) Hardcovers look prettier on my shelf :) but either is fine!
3) Make-believe!
4) Young Adult... w/the occasional Adult book.
5) BOOKMARKS for goodness sake!
6) Barely open the book ;)
7) Neither! I prefer hot cocoa or Sprite!
8) On the couch, it's easier to hold the books, plus, my bed is too comfy, lol!
9) There are so many series that I am behind right now, so I have to go with standalones, lol! I don't think I can start a new series just yet, or at least until I catch up and/or finish the ones I'm reading now!
10) Original!
11) Audiobooks! I easily get motion sickness :p
12) Author crushes... no stalking, I swear!
13) I love interviews! It's such a quick fun way to get to know them better!

Shocking book story - when I was in grade 2, I stole a book from the school library.  I didn't mean to, it was overdue and I went on the last day of school to return it but the librarian wasn't there.  So I brought it home with me.  But I was too scared to tell my parents I didn't return my book on time, so I brought it home and hid it in the box of my Tic Tac Toe game.  But then I got scared that my parents would want to play Tic Tac Toe and they would find it (haha, yeah right) so I threw the book out!!!
What's funny is I wasn't scared of my parents finding out, they wouldn't have cared, but they would have made me return it on the first day of school and I was scared of the librarian!  Thankfully, she never asked about the book.

Phew, it feels so good to get that off my chest, I've carried it with me for 25 years now ;)

Daisy said...

Maybe not very funny, but I used to get in trouble at school for reading when I was a kid. This is also pretty much the ONLY thing I ever got in trouble for, I was such a goody-goody ;) I frequently got scolded for reading when the teacher though I should have been paying attention to him explaining something for the tenth time and once we were watching The Longest Day in class when I was 10 (and it should really be called the longest movie... I definitely did not appreciate it) and I was bored and started reading my much more interesting book. Which earned me a call to my parents...

PART TWO:

Physical book or eBook? --> definitely physical book, I absolutely love my ereader, but I rather have a physical copy
Paperback or Hardcover? --> HARDCOVER! Heavy, but so pretty...
Reality or Make-believe? --> Both, I need the right mix
Adult or Young Adult? --> Young Adult, but Adult historical romances ;)
Dog ears or Bookmars? --> BOOKMARKS, I am horrified by people harming books!
Breaking the spine or barely open the book? --> Lol! I guess I'm more of a Barely open the book person :)
Tea or Coffee? --> Tea, definitely
Reading in bed or on the couch? --> couch, the bed makes me fall asleep
Series or Standalone? --> Series, I love series
Original or TV Adaptation? --> original
Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? --> I defy the motion sickness!
Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? --> author crushes
Interview or Guest Post? --> Guest post

When I was about 8 years old, I told my ''boyfriend'' (who was also in my school class), that if he wanted to keep ''going out'' with me, he had to get as many Spot the Dog books as possible out from the library for me.  And he did ;-)

Physical book or eBook? As much as I LOVE physical books I love the freedom of ebooks - and I can squeeze hundreds and hundreds onto my reader!

Paperback or hardcover?  Again, I LOVE hardcovers, but paperbacks are usually cheaper.  I usually only buy hardbacks of books I intend to keep forever (most of my paperbacks will go to a new home when I move back to Australia)

Reality or make-believe?  Make-believe - it's the main reason I read - escapism!

Adult or Young-Adult?  Until I started blogging I rarely read YA - now it's about 40% of my reads - I'd always just assumed that YA was about insta-love, but now I know better.

Dog ears or Bookmarks?  Bookmarks!  I hate dog-eared pages and collecting bookmarks is fun!

Breaking the spine or barely open?  I try not to break spines but I admit sometimes I do!Tea or coffee?  Usually coffee but I'm a huge fan of green tea!In Bed or on the couch?  Bed! But most of my reading is on the couch.Series or standalone?  I hate cliffhangers with a burning passion, so I definitely prefer standalones!Original or TV adaptation?  Original!Motion Sickness or Audiobooks?  I try and push through my motion sickness (which I get on EVERY kind of transport!  But I love audiobooks too, so either works!Author crushes or who-was-that-guy-again?  author crushes!Interview or Guest Post?  Interviews - I'm nosy!

Part 1- Well, a short short time ago in a Barnes and Noble close to home, I went looking for a fun contemporary novel. I found a beautiful cover of a girl and a boy with a frosty blue/white background. The back described love issues, drama, galore and i knew i wanted to read that book. I expected it to be a contemporary novel.
Then, later that night, I opened the plastic baggie with the book inside, took out the book and leaned on my bed reading to read. I opened the first page and the narrator started talking about dying and being brought back to life and queer creatures called Moroi and Stirgoi. "What?" My mind said. "is going on?"
I went to look at the front cover and then to the back, and then i noticed, in bright read letters read "Vampire Academy"
The contemporary novel, Frostbite by Richelle mead, was in-fact a vampire novel.
well, the story was funny when it happened.

Okay, it was my 24th or 25th birthday, and I knew a friend of mine was sending me a certain book as a gift.  I had a few people (friends, mom, son, brother) over when UPS delivered the package. I had my brother open it,  because I can't stand tearing cardboard.  He pulls out the book I was expecting and tosses it to me.  As I'm looking through it, he pulls out an another unexpected book... it's was a huge, hardcover edition of Karma Sutra.  I wasn't too embarrassed about the book itself, but more about everyone knew who the certain someone was that got it for me.  It was pretty funny, and no one let me forget about it for the next week.

I love covers and filling my bookshelves, but it's much easier to travel with e-books and there is no wait time when you want the next in the series.Paperback or Hardcover?I like books.  All books.  I tend to buy hardcover though, because I buy a lot of new releases.Reality or Make-believe?Make-believe.Adult or Young-Adult?Young Adult, because even though I'm no longer a teen, I'm still trying to figure out my place in the world and have a lot of growing up to do.  I'm reading a lot more adult fiction now though.Dog ears or Bookmarks?Bookmarks!!!!Breaking the spine or Barely open the book?Barely open the book!!!!!!!  But I tend to break the spine no matter how hard I try.  I get really into the story sometimes.Tea or Coffee?Coffee, but I love both!Reading in bed or On the couch? In bed.  And I read in an armchair a lot. Series or Standalone? Both, but I am a sucker for a good series.Original or TV Adaptation?I like original television.  I don't actually watch any adaptations... nothing against them, but I don't watch much tv in general. Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks?Audiobooks!!  I just listened to The Scorpio Races and it is one of the best I've ever listened to!Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again?I totally have author crushes. Interview or Guest post?
Depends on what they are talking about.  I don't really like character interviews, but I find interviews about the writing process and guest posts about writing to be interesting.

Great challenge! I can't resist answerable a list of questions, so I decided on part II (besides, I don't remember any good bookish stories).

Physical book or eBook? - Physical book - not really keen on ebooks.

Paperback or Hardcover? - I love hardbacks and often choose them when the price is right but I mainly buy paperbacks.

Reality or Make-believe? Make believe, though all fiction is to some degree make believe.

Adult or Young-Adult? I am an adult and so prefer books that are written for adults, though appreciate some YA fiction.

Dog ears or Bookmarks? I never ever dog-ear a page. I always use bookmarks, even if that is a slip of paper torn from something else.

Breaking the spine or Barely open the book? Again, never break the spine and read carefully. This is why hardbacks can be better as they are stronger.

Tea or Coffee? Tea!

Reading in bed or On the couch? Tend to fall asleep in bed, so on the couch.

Series or Standalone? - I enjoy series though certain types of books lend themselves better to stand alone.

Original or TV Adaptation? Again depends. I enjoy TV adaptations but see them as a very different medium.

Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? - Cannot read in the car (when not driving!) but always have audiobook in the car.

Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Rarely - probably only Neil Gaiman but he is 'my type' so probably fancy him no matter his occupation.

Interview or Guest post? No real preference but tend to read interviews when they appear.

 I'll do both!

PART ONE: Share your most shocking, embarrassing or funny book related story.

This is pretty recent, but I did a review on Arise (Hereafter #2), which was a novel about a ghost girl and the human boy she loves.  And everytime they make out in the book, she De-materializes.  So I wrote that I thought that was the best birth control ever for teens, and I said that I would totally let my children date dead people.  But then I qualified that by saying ghosts only, since I didn't want to raise a necrophiliac. Then my blogger friend (who shall remain anonymous, but she's participating in this readathon) said she was surprised that I didn't want to raise a necromancer.I guess she read it wrong.Because I'd be cool with a necromancer kid, but I'm still firmly against necrophiliacs.

- Or -

PART TWO: Answer all of these "this or that" questions.

Physical book or eBook? Both, please!

Paperback or Hardcover? Again, both, please!

Reality or Make-believe? Usually Make-believe

Adult or Young-Adult? Both

Dog ears or Bookmarks? Bookmarks!!!!!!

Breaking the spine or Barely open the book?Barely opening the book.

Tea or Coffee? Usually Coffee, but I love tea too.

Reading in bed or On the couch? Couch, but I'll read anywhere.

Series or Standalone? Again, both, but I love series because you develop a relationship with the characters.

Original or TV Adaptation? Original!! Movies can be good, but most tv adaptations suck.

Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? Audiobooks.

Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Author crushes/stalking.

Interview or Guest post? Hmm... I guess I'm going with Guest Post, but I love really crazy author interviews, where instead of "what inspired you to write" the questions are more "Name a body part you'd chop off first, if you had to chop off a body part".

All right, so back before anyone knew what the heck Harry Potter was, I received the first book as a birthday gift and set it on my shelf because I had other things that I was reading/doing etc at that age. A few months later I was apparently feeling secretive in the way that young children sometimes do and so I decided that I was going to start reading this book about witches and wizards, but not tell my parents. I definitely knew that there was no reason to keep it a secret, but I apparently just found it fun to go out of my way to hide reading this book. I have no memory of when it went from this fun secret project to "OMG must read more right NAO" but Harry Potter definitely didn't stay a secret long in my family after that first book ;-)

I believe that Willo Davis Roberts is the reason that when I was around 9 years old, my dad told me that if I tried to run away from home, I would get kidnapped and turned into a crack whore. (True story, really happened.)

I honestly believed that I could be as cool as all the main characters in these books I was reading by WDR, where these kids my own age outsmarted adults and thwarted their dastardly plans all the time. So, why couldn't I?!

I was going to run away one day, and my dad tried to explain why it wasn't a good idea. Something bad might happen, I could get hurt, kidnapped, etc. Well, I had an explanation for everything, so it eventually devolved into my dad telling me this crazy pimp was going to tie me up, force some form of highly addictive drug into my system via whatever means necessary (although most probably an unsterilized needle) and force me to sell my small 9/10 year old baby to creepy old men in order to fund my new habit.

All this was done on the way to church, in front of my whole family (which at the time was Mom, older sister, and two younger brothers).
